A dear friend shared with me recently how this time of year is especially busy for her and her team. It was clear to me that she was feeling a bit overwhelmed, even frantic.
During such times, tempers can run high (higher than normal) while patience runs shorter. Small inconsequential comments or actions can manifest into giant bouts of dissension and low morale. Physical, spiritual, and emotional energy can be drained, and with lower resistance, certain health issues can come into play. Can you relate? I certainly can.
My friend also shared that in the midst of what seemed like a “storm,” one of her colleagues had looked into her eyes (and I would say also looked into her heart), asked how she was doing, offered a word of understanding, and gave her the boost she needed to keep going.
If this scenario is resonating with you in a particular way, I want to suggest:
- Slow down just a bit because doing so will allow you to think more clearly, avoid mistakes, and duplication of efforts.
- Reach out to someone who genuinely cares for you in order to gain a fresh perspective and the support you need.
- Prioritize because, while everything may be necessary, everything doesn’t carry the same level of importance at the same time.
- Be the calm that settles someone else’s storm. A bit of compassion and a few kind words expressing empathy and awareness can be transformative. If applied well, they will be received with great joy and prayerfully passed on or even returned when you need them most.
- And as my boss always tells me, “Breathe. Cathy, just breathe.” Thanks be to God for good companions who share the journey.
