In her beautifully written book Becoming, former First Lady Michelle Obama writes about the progression of her life from early childhood, to the many twists and turns it has taken along the way, and the hopefulness of a future not yet seen.
“…I am still in progress,” she writes, “and I hope that I always will be. For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end…It’s all a process, steps along a path.”
I could not agree more. Needless to say, I have admired the grace and dignity with which she seems to have navigated her life thus far and the sheer determination to remain true to herself, come what may.
There is no way that any of us can predict the future, but what I know for certain is that every minute of every day is a holy and precious gift. Every day is filled with countless opportunities to learn, grow, mature, to be, and to become closer to the person God created us to be. And it will take all of our experiences—the ups and downs, ins and outs, wins and losses, tears and laughter—to make it so. Each new step gives way to the next, and each ending gives way to a fresh new beginning.
If you haven’t read the book, I highly recommend it. Even with all that life has afforded her (challenges as well as triumphs), Michelle Obama is still becoming. So am I. So are you, dear friend.
Grace and peace,
