This week, I celebrated my 66th birthday! It was a wonderful day, and I am grateful for every expression of love that came my way—cards, texts, calls, Facebook posts, gifts, kind thoughts, positive vibes, etc.

Interestingly enough, part of my meditation that morning included this quote by Agatha Christie:

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing.

I could not agree more, and this year especially, I cannot help but be mindful of the hundreds and thousands of people who will not get to celebrate a birthday in 2021.

There is something gratifying about hitting a “certain age” and being able to look back over the years knowing that:

  • You have been resilient; you’ve made it thus far
  • You have done a fair amount of good
  • The days ahead are fewer than those behind; therefore, each one is precious, not to be squandered or taken for granted
  • Your life has borne the fruit of love given and received
  • You have stayed the course and kept the faith

As always, I am counting my blessings for family, friends, health, a beloved community, AND the first Covid vaccine, among many other things.

Do not be afraid to show up boldly in your own life, dear friend, despite the challenges you may face. We only get one shot at it, and while we have our beliefs, no one knows for sure what is on the other side.

“…through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing.” Indeed, it is!

Grace and peace,
Pastor Cathy
